Generally accepted as the first "Lost World" novel. Whatmore notes that the sheets of the first edition were bound in three batches. There were 2000 copies printed of which 1000 were bound with a catalogue dated 5G.8.85 (first issue), 500 were bound with a catalogue dated 5G.10.85 (second issue) and 500 were sent to New York (American issue).
