Wood, Starr
FINE COLLECTION OF 45 INK AND WATERCOLOUR CARTOONS
various sizes, 45 pieces, mostly ink drawings or ink and monochrome watercolour drawings, mostly signed, many with captions, some light soiling; [together with] printed and handcoloured artwork for Starr Wood's Annual No 52

A significant collection of Starr Wood's cartoons, including many relating to nudism.

The caricaturist Starr Wood (1870-1944) founded his own magazine, The Windmill, in 1890. From 1910 until around 1935 he ran Starr Wood's Magazine. He also contributed to Chums, Fun, Tatler, Strand and Punch. Houfe notes that "Wood's humour is seldom above that of the seaside postcard but he can be a funny draughtsman..."
