4to (219 x 154mm.), printed in red and black, title within woodcut border (McKerrow and Ferguson 16154), music, woodcut of crucifixion in the text, woodcut initials, ownership signature of the collector Thomas Baker on title page with his notes on rear endpaper, later calf gilt, all edges gilt, upper cover detached, spine defective, title mounted, final leaf repaired, penultimate leaf possibly from another copy, a few burn-holes

Provenance

The Church of England clergyman, scholar and collector Thomas Baker (1656--1740) [see lot 487], with his ownership signature "Tho: Baker Coll: Jo: Socius ejectus" on title page and his notes on this edition in ink at the end; the bibliographer and printseller William Herbert (1718--1795), his ownership signature dated 1769 on the same page

Herbert's large collection of several thousand books including manuscripts, incunabula and contemporary works was sold by his nephew in three sales between 1796 and 1798.

Catalogue Note

A rare survival. One of a few editions of the Sarum Rite as reintroduced and published in Mary's reign (from 1553), and promulgated throughout England, before again being replaced by the Book of Common Prayer after Elizabeth I came to the throne in 1558.
