Catalogue Note

Candy Canes is an iconic example of Wayne Thiebaud's sweet, playful still life works. By the early 1960s, Thiebaud's style was widely considered to have matured and these colorful, saccharine images of mass consumer goods would take center stage during the rest of his career. Painted from memory and not actual objects, these everyday, quotidian subjects evoke a sense of wistful nostalgia for the idealized American life.

The brilliant, striking colors, thickly applied pastel, and the simplicity of the composition seen in Candy Canes work together to create to an infectious, joyful image that instills a lingering sense of desire and saudade for times passed by.
