Catalogue Note
JP84S).

The Russian Séraphin Soudbinine met Rodin in Paris and became his pupil before becoming the first master of stone carving in his atelier. Recognised particularly for his stoneware works, Soudbinine regularly exhibited at the Parisian Salons from 1905 until 1944.
Another lacquered and gilt wood sculpture, also dated 1921, and titled 'Apocalypse-Sinner of Babylone', exhibits the same iconography and dimensions as the sculpture offered here; it is now part of the collection of the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (inv. n. JP116S); an Adoration, of slightly smaller dimensions is also in the museum’s collection (inv. JP84S).
