Description

  • Huanguali
well proportioned, the wide rectangular frame with a soft-mat sleeping surface, supported on a constricted waist above a straight bracket-shaped apron on four baluster legs ending in scrolling feet, the waist and apron meticulously carved with archaistic dragons flanking a flaming pearl at the front as well as various beribboned auspicious emblems on the side, the six cylindrical posts joined with five openwork panels forming a latticework gallery reticulated with archaistic dragon roundels, ruyi blooms and floral designs, all below five horizontal humpbacked stretchers and a top rail reticulated with various flowers and fruits including pomegranates, peaches, prunus, magnolia, lotus, crab apple and kaki fruit, the posts also joined at the top by a canopy of corresponding form

Condition

The canopy bed appear to be overall in good condition. The lower part may be of an earlier date than the canopy structure which may have been added to what was originally a daybed. The side rails and posts of the canopy structure is made of older sections of wood while the reticulated panels forming the gallery around the top appear to be more recently carved section. But overall the ensemble is harmonious and consistent and in excellent presentation state. There is a layer of caning surface beneath the soft-mat, the latter having a few occasional water marks. The actual colour is consistent, if not slightly lighter compared to the catalogue illustration.
