Catalogue Note

The Vintage Morn (private collection) was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1896. It depicts two boys who have fallen asleep in the forest while gathering fruit and wake to find a quartet of female revellers celebrating the God of Wine by dancing naked to the tune of pipe playing. This is a highly-finished study for one of the intoxicated Bacchantes holding a bunch of grapes in one hand and a shallow golden cup in the other.
