Catalogue Note

This engaging portrait of four of the children of the owner of the largest copper factory in Swansea, depicts a stormy day at the beach. The children are optimistically bare-footed as though they had hoped to paddle in the sea but ominous clouds and foaming waters make this prospect unlikely. It depicts four of the six children of Henry Hussey Vivian (later Lord Swansea 1821-1894) and his third wife, Averil Beaumont (1841-1934). The two girls are Averil Vivian (born 4 December 1876, married George Tryon, 1st Baron Tryon and died 1 February 1959) dressed in white and her older sister Violet Averil Margaret Vivian (born 3 December 1871 and died 30 March 1943). The boys are Henry Hussey Vivian (born 5 February 1873 and died 11 December 1898) and Odo Richard Vivian (born 22 April 1875 and died 16 November 1934) who became the 3rd Baron Swansea after the death of his half-brother Ernest Ambrose Vivian. Their mother was apparently painted by Hicks in the same year as the children.
