Catalogue Note

a marriage begins to crack  and martha ignores her husband's attempts to contact    Writing to his mother-in-law (whom he frequently referred to as "Mother") Hemingway relates his worry over his wife's slience while she's abroad.  Sadly, it seems he's worrying for the wrong reasons. Martha was already becoming disinclined to return home to him and the marriage would effectively be over by the next year.

"Still no word from our beloved Marty [on assignment covering the war in Europe]. I called her twice 16 and 18 days ago that I couldn't come over now and advising her to come home as she had planned.... But no word. Have tried to get in touch through the Embassy, Duff Coober and Colliers. But no word at all. Am so worried she never received my cables. Haven't heard from her since Jane 21.... Marty's book [Liana] has had wonderful reviews all over the country. Several say that she is a better writer than me which should please her."
