On paper (15 5/8 x 19 1/2 in.; 396 x 495 mm), [Washington, before 15 August 1798], accomplished in a clerical hand and signed by Adams as president of the United States, countersigned by the Secretary of State ("Timothy Pickering") and by the Collector of the Port of Norfolk ("Otway Byrd"), also signed and accompanied by the certificate issued by a Norfolk notary public, being a pass for the schooner Julius Caesar, commanded by John K. Hall and bound for St. Bartholomews with a cargo of sundries, text in four columns, embossed papers seals of the United States and the Norfolk notary; browned, some chipping and separations at folds.
