Catalogue Note

The motif of the khamsa or hand of Fatima has been used on jewellery throughout the Middle East and North Africa for centuries and is an important amuletic symbol of protection against the evil eye. Traditionally, it is the right hand which is usually represented and is often associated with Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, and the five fingers with the five pillars of Islam.
