Catalogue Note

The inscription reads: 'THAKKER SOONDER JEE NAN JEE RANGOON 1938'.
For a comparable trophy cup bearing the same maker's mark, also London, 1877, see Sotheby's, London, 18 June 1970, lot 226A. Like the present cup, it was decorated on either side with panels of figures attributed to an otherwise unknown artist by the name of W. Allard. The style of these panels is similar to that of a small silver plaque, struck with the maker's mark of Frederick Brasted, London, 1879, and signed 'W. Allard,' which was sold at Sotheby's, London, on 3 July 1969, lot 235.
