Condition

Internal fracture running on unillustrated side from the left of the catalogue illustration at the top to about 3/4 of the way down, in total approx. 25 cm in length. And another running from the top to the right-hand side of the catalogue illustration down to the bulbous base. These are not visible since the technique of surface decoration gives the vase an opaque quality. The black connecting stems, visible in the catalogue illustration, were possibly the cause of the internal cracks since they match the course of the internal fractures. This is therefore probably an étude, i.e; a vase which has not been finished with surface carving which was likely intended for some of the flowerheads and leaves. This is a remarkably modern piece conveying a wild and freeform floral landscape, quite unlike the meticulous rendition of plant forms which one associates with Gallé's designs.
