Very good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture.
Some old dark hairlines with tiny gaps running along the upper part of the shaft.

Parmi les épingles en ivoire servant à parer les cheveux des femmes ou les coiffes des hommes Mangbetu, les plus élaborées sont celles ponctuées d'un ou parfois de plusieurs disques, dont la plupart sont exécutées en deux parties assemblées. Celles sculptées dans une seule pièce - comme ici - sont les plus rares et "les plus prestigieuses, car leur réalisation nécessitait beaucoup plus d'ivoire" (Schildkrout in Felix, White Gold Black, Black Hands, Ivory Sculpture in Congo, vol. 7, p. 90). Celle-ci en constitue l'un des témoins les plus exceptionnels, tant par la prouesse de la sculpture que par la majesté de la dimension et des trois disques qui en ponctuent l'élan. Voir Schildkrout (African Reflexions, Art from Northeastern Zaire1990, p. 131) pour une épingle comparable, collectée en 1914, dans les collections de l’American Museum of Natural History (inv. n° 90.1/1867).
