Condition

Very good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Some scratches througout with few insect holes by location. Very beautiful dark patina. Catalogue Note

L'art des formes, dans lequel excellèrent les sculpteurs Mangbetu, trouve son apogée dans les tambours nedundu, célébrés dès leur découverte pour la superbe élégance de leurs lignes et leur beauté épurée, mise en valeur par une patine laquée. 
Sculptés dans un bois très dur et minutieusement patinés, ils étaient joués en groupe dans un ensemble orchestral, lors des festivités ou des cérémonies rituelles, principalement liées aux chefs (Brincard, Afrique : formes sonores, 1990, p. 119). « Instruments de prestige, les tambours à fente de ce type étaient également offerts aux hauts dignitaires par les chefs Mangbetu, afin de les investir d'une autorité » (Burssens, Mangbetu. Art de cour africain de collections privée belges, 1992, p. 24).
