Parmi les plus célèbres collections d'art africain constituées à l'époque de l'entre-deux-guerres s'impose celle d'Helena Rubinstein, Princesse Gourielli, partageant sa vie entre Paris et New York. Son conseiller artistique, le docteur et écrivain Paul Chadourne, parvint à convaincre Frédéric H. Lem de lui céder son éblouissante collection d'art d'Afrique de l'Ouest, dont la plupart des œuvres - incluant ce très beau masque kpelie- intégrèrent la collection emblématique d'Helena Rubinstein.
