Condition

Under naked eye: the painting appears in very good condition. It is in its original canvas and in its original frame. There is an old tear (approx 20 cm) in the upper left hand side in the drapery, at the background (visible on the photography). Under UV light: A green varnish appears in the dark parts. Some tiny retouches are visible in the drapery of décolleté and one minor retouch on the right arm . One long scratch is filed in between the head of the monkey and the hand of the slave. A very tiny retouch on the slave wrist. Very good condition

Catalogue Note

La princesse Zainab Nazli Khanum Effendi  (1853 – 1913) est une princesse égyptienne de la dynastie de Muhammad Ali et l'une des premières femmes à raviver la tradition des salons littéraires dans le monde arabe, dans son palais du Caire au début des années 1880 et jusqu'à sa mort. Elle passe sa jeunesse à Istanbul où elle reçoit une éducation rarement accordée aux femmes de son époque. Elle parlait six langues dont le turc, l'arabe, le français, l'italien et l'allemand. Mariée à l'ambassadeur de Turquie Halil Sherif Pacha elle vécut brièvement à Paris. Après la mort de son mari, elle s'installa au Caire dans un palais qui accueillit des soirées mondaines et des intellectuels devenus ses amis.
