Condition
Executed on a thick cream wove paper, not laid down, and taped to the overmount along all four edges. There is some paint shrinkage and fine lines of craquelure to some of the thicker pigments, with some associated tiny paint losses. Otherwise, this work is in overall good condition.
Colours: fairly accurate in the printed catalogue, though the brown pigments are slightly less orange in the original.

Catalogue Note
Des Fontaines dans le Désert is one of a series of 25 illustrations commissioned by Shorewood Publishers in New York, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the independence of the state of Israel. Named The Aliyah Suite, the original watercolours inspired a lithographic portfolio which was published the following year in 1968. These illustrations were unveiled at the Huntington Hartford Museum’s Gallery of Modern Art in New York on 1st April 1968, when 250 sets of twenty-five lithographs were produced and the plates destroyed. Executed in his celebrated Surrealist style, the work depicts the National water carrier of Israel, installed to transfer water from the Sea of Galilee throughout the vast territory. Dalí here artfully juxtaposes contemporary current events with his inimitable Surrealist characterisation.
