Description

Large folio (517 x 368mm.), 105 albumen prints, most signed and numbered in the negative by Bourne, a few signed Shepherd and a few of Ceylon signed Bourne & Shepherd (average 230 x 290mm., or the reverse), including two folding panoramas, mounted on card, recto and verso, contemporary black morocco by Parkins and Gotto, upper cover with large gilt monogram 'A.L.B.', gilt edges, light spotting, minor stains, wear or fading (overall the prints in very good condition)

Provenance

Col. Thomas Harry Boss, OBE, MC, (1895-1980); he was awarded the MC following the Battle of Messines in WW1 whilst serving with the Post Office Rifles, he later transferred to the Indian Army in which he served until 1947.

Catalogue Note

A fine album of photographs of India (92) and Ceylon (12), together with an image of the 'Hairy family of Mandalay' by Bourne and Shepherd. The images include views and people in Bombay, Agra, Delhi, Amritsar, Darjeeling, Kashmir, the Himalayas, Calcutta, and Ceylon. Among the group photographs is one of the Maharajah of Kashmir and his entourage, and one of another tribal leader.
The Bourne negative numbers range from 776 to 2060; Shepherd nos. 1386 and 1387; and Bourne & Shepherd range from 2082 to 2150 and no. 2361.
