Catalogue Note

During the mid-eighteenth century a number of key artists fled from Delhi to the provincial Mughal province of Awadh (Oudh). One of these artists was Mir Kalan Khan who established a distinctive Awadhi style of painting. Characterised by an assimilation of European, Mughal and Deccani influences, artists began placing an emphasis on spatial awareness and volume, setting their subjects within realistic landscapes.
