  • AMERICAN NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER
  • Cotton
  • 16 1/2 by 17 1/2 inches
Executed in a variety of stitches including Rococo, Outline, French knot, Cross, Tent, Split, Satin and Eyelet, in tones of green, yellow, white and magenta silk on linen and worked with bands of alphabets on a long poem entitled The Amiable Virgin, intersected by panels and bands of birds and flowers enclosed within a stylized floral border; inscribed Unity Lewis, her work, done in the year 1789.

Condition

Foundation has been pulled in areas by embroidery resulting in a few breaks to ground, all very minor. Colors have darkened although reds have retained their vibrancy.
