Catalogue Note

Joan Ludman writes that, "Kenneth Koch, one of the New York School of poets, was a close friend of Fairfield Porter.  The portrait was painted on Great Spruce Head Island, Maine.  Porter and Koch often wrote to each other in sestina form and at one time wrote a sestina together.  Porter had learned the rules of sestina form from Kenneth Koch". (Joan Ludman, 2001, op. cit., p. 264)
