Catalogue Note

Born to an artistic family, Gilchrist's father, William Wallace Gilchrist, Sr., was an American composer and a major figure of the nineteenth century music scene in Philadelphia.  Gilchrist showed an early proclivity for painting and his teachers included Wiliam Merritt Chase and Winslow Homer.  His paintings often featured family members relaxing in their sun-filled home.  In the present work, the artist's mother is the sitter.
