Estate of the artist Anne E.C. Porter (his wife) By descent to the present owners
Joan Ludman, Fairfield Porter: A Catalogue Raisonné of the Paintings, Watercolors, and Pastels, New York, 2001, no. L973, p. 320
Fairfield Porter’s daughter Katie recalls that, late in his life, Porter created a number of works showing the waves and beaches of the Atlantic Ocean near his house in Southampton, where he often walked on the beach with the family's golden retriever, Bruno. The present work is an oil study from the artist's sketchbook.
This work is in very good condition. The paper is hinged to the mat at the top and sides. There is a very thin vertical scratch near the lower right edge.
