Condition

Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Base has been broken and glued. It is eroded on edges, slightly to the front and much more to the rear. Losses to both hands and the face (ritual prelevements?) open cracks are visible on the proper left side of the figure from the head to the thigh. Beautiful old deep glossy patina.

Catalogue Note

Daniel Biebuyck attribue ces rares statuettes de la région du Kivu oriental, "aux traits caractéristiques cubistes [...], à quelques groupes historiquement hétérogènes - Bembe, Boyo, Basikasingo -, désignés par le terme pré-Bembe". Intervenant dans le cadre du Bwami Lega-Bembe, elles "constituent un symbole de rang et de statut dans le bwami et servent en tant qu'instruments de divination pour la transmission des connaissances secrètes" (Biebuyck in Trésors d'Afrique, Musée de Tervuren, 1995, p. 374-375).
