Condition
Overall in fair condition. The ebonized wood surfaces with light surface scratches, nicks and dings throughout consistent with age and use. With light surface soiling to the recessed contours of the design, consistent with age. The parchment with age cracks and discoloration consistent with aging of the material. The parchment shows evidence of prior restoration with areas of scattered overpainting and lacquering for stabilization. The parchment to the top surface of the lower shelf with tears, the largest measuring 6 inches in length as see in the catalogue illustration. This area with possible adjacent minor losses to the parchment. Tears to the parchment on the lower shelf, the largest measuring 6 ½ inches and lifting of parchment along the length of the shelf. The bone decoration with areas of loss and edge chips throughout, localized around the legs of the piece. One of the legs with a small loss to the interior side of the lower area of the leg, immediately above the lower shelf which measures approximately 1 ½ inches in length; this appears to be an old loss with evidence of a prior old restoration. The detached piece of wood in this area of the leg is presently available for potential restoration, if desired. The metal surfaces throughout with some light discoloration and rubbing to the patinated surfaces consistent with age and gentle handling. The silk tassels appear original and show minor discoloration and some edge losses that explain the slightly irregular lengths. Each of the tassels are likely lacking some silk elements. This piece is distinguished by its wonderful historic provenance and highlights the artist's penchant for aestheticizing and recombining design motifs from historical Moorish and Middle Eastern cultures.
