Condition

This painting is in good condition and ready to hang. The composition is painted on a photographic board (see catalogue note), bearing stamped inscriptions and date 1896 on the verso. This board is flat, even and ensuring a stable support. There are a few scattered fine lines of craquelure, as just visible in the illustration, and a number of tiny light scattered surface dents. Ultra-violet light reveals some minor retouchings, notably along the left framing edge, a fine band in the shallow water to the lower right, and a few scattered spots. Presented in a decorative gilt frame. Colours: the printed catalogue illustration is a little too 'open' compared with the work's appearance, and the colours are somewhat richer in reality.

Catalogue Note

Painted circa 1900. Sorolla painted the present work directly onto photographic paper, which he would have acquired from his father-in-law, the photographer Antonio García. Sorolla's apprenticeship in García's studio during his teenage years strongly informed his later aesthetic, and the fact that this free, 'snapshot' impression is painted on the unusual support of photographic paper in a sense makes it a clever mise-en-abîme.

Playa de Valencia
is dedicated to José Manaut Nogués, art critic, lawyer, and personal friend of Sorolla.
