Provenance

Sale: Sotheby's, London, 17 October 1997, lot 323
Purchased at the above sale by the present owner

Condition

The canvas has not been lined. There are some scattered thin lines of craquelure which are not particularly distracting, and some light frame rubbing at the extreme edges including a few tiny spots of paint flaking near the centre of the left edge. Ultraviolet light reveals notably a circa 7 by 7cm area of restoration in the tapestry in the upper right quadrant and another measuring circa 5 by 6cm below this to the right of centre (both patched on the reverse), and some scattered spots in stone wall in the upper-left quadrant. Apart from some tiny spots of retouching in her feet and right arm, the figure is virtually untouched. There is some scattered surface dirt and the work could benefit from a surface clean if desired. Presented in a substantial, elaborate gilt frame with Islamic ornaments.
