Catalogue Note

Mathurin Moreau, son and student of Jean-Baptiste Moreau, entered the École des Beaux-Arts at the age of nineteen, exhibiting at the Salon for the first time in 1848. He was regularly praised for his Salon contributions and obtained a number of distinctions, including a gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle.

At the Salon of 1909, Moreau exhibited a bronze group entitled La Source de Jouvence, which may be related to the present work. He was made a Chevalier of the Legion d'Honeur in 1885 and Mayor of the XIX arrondissemont in 1878.
