Catalogue Note

The design of the present pair of armchairs derives from the celebrated Fauteuil du Trône, supplied by Jacob-Desmalter for Napoléon Bonaparte's Salle du Trône at the Château de St. Cloud in 1808. Interestingly, Desmalter's original chairs were made of gilt walnut, while the present lot is of gilt mahogany, both demonstrating the high quailty of French manufacture.
A pair of armchairs with similar designs to the present lot sold Christie's East, September 26, 2000, lot 260, $41,125.
