  • 'SIMONE + OLYMPIC WRESTLERS, ROME'
  • ferrotyped gelatin silver print
  • 15 3/4 x 12 inches
ferrotyped, signed, titled, and dated in pencil and with the photographer's studio stamp in red ink twice on the reverse, 1960

Provenance

Howard Greenberg Gallery, New York, 1999

Literature

Mark Holborn, ed., William Klein: In and Out of Fashion (New York, 1994), pp. 54-5 (variant)

Condition

This ferrotyped print is in generally very good condition. As is typical of ferrotyped prints, superficial surface scratches, a slight unevenness of the generally glossy surface, and occasional pitting are visible throughout. In raking light, the following are visible: a few scattered handling creases not appearing to break the emulsion and a few deposits of original retouching in the upper left portion of the image. The print is trimmed to the image, and some wear and attendant chipping of the print's edges are visible upon close examination. The reverse is lightly soiled, and the following are written in an unidentified hand in pencil: 'Vogue 162/2,' 'BKV-181,' and 'PF31709.'

Catalogue Note

"I liked the tough girls from New York and the back-streets rather than the upper-class socialites. In my photos the girls are always in trouble, always askew . . . Helmut Newton's pictures come out of mine, because I was the first to use hard girls."
