Catalogue Note

Lady Maria was the eldest daughter of George, 4th Duke of Grafton (1760-1844), who himself was painted by Lawrence in 1816 (see K. Garlick, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Oxford 1989, p. 197, no. 344). In 1810, the sitter married Sir William Oglander, 6th Bt. (1769- 1852) of Nunwell, the Isle of Wight.

This oil study is a preparatory sketch for Lawrence’s full-length portrait of Lady Maria (see K. Garlick, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Oxford 1989, p. 247, no. 617). He exhibited that work at the Royal Academy in 1817 and, as here, placed the sitter in the same pose and standing on a seashore.
