the mount inscribed: RECOME[N]CE ... [heart symbol] ... QUI + NE + BOIF [sic] X FOUF + J and with an unidentified coat of arms and the horn with an old white label inscribed in blue ink: WA/1783

Condition

Overall the condition of the horn is good with minor dirt and wear to the surface consistent with age. There are losses to the scalloped edge of the mount. The moulding above the scalloped edge is warped and partially detached in areas. There is warping to the mount throughout, together with small nicks and scratches. There are also a few lacunae to the mount. There are traces of dirt to the mount and also a few small areas of greening. There is flaking to the horn, consistent with material and age, particularly to the inside around the top. There is also some stable splitting to the horn, again, mostly visible to the inside. There is a prominent area of splits beneath the word 'NE' on the outside of the horn. There are a few nicks and lacunae to the horn on the outside. There is some minor dirt and wear to the very well constructed modern base.

The charming inscription on the 15th-century mount of this impressive drinking horn implores the drinker to begin again if they are not already drinking like mad. Such a bawdy inscription would have caused amusement within a convival setting and would have served to initiate discussion around the object.
