Catalogue Note

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries there was an insatiable demand for the full bodied yet delicate style of Chinese wall hangings and paper within Western culture.  The meticulously designed patterns in this work are exceptionally intricate, illustrating a combination of the European ‘all-over’ floral design with the manner and foliage of Chinoiserie; the offered lot typical of the finest examples made during the early 19th century.  Jean Hamilton and Charles Oman, Wallpapers: An History and Illustrated Catalogue of the Collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 1982, p.58-61.
