Catalogue Note

Janet Backhouse dated this miniature portraying St. Christopher carrying the Christ Child to circa 1490-1500.
Similar miniatures by Bourdichon, who succeeded Jean Fouquet as painter to Louis XI in 1481 and went on to serve Charles VIII, Louis XII and Francis I, are in the British Library (inv. no. MS Harley 2877). Both the present work and those found in the British Library share closely comparable facial types as well as evocative landscapes achieved through a meticulous technique. Similar qualities as well as comparable inscriptions to that in the present work also appear in Bourdichon's dismembered Hours of Louis XII of circa 1500, from which leaves were recently acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (inv. no. E.949-2003), and the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles (inv. nos. MS. 79, RECTO, MS. 79A, RECTO & MS. 79B, VERSO).
