Patek Philippe has become highly recognized for the quality of their decorated enamel dials, painted by hand in very limited numbers and released publicly at Basel, or often privately only to a discreet few.

The dials were painted with various motifs: birds such as the present lot, flowers, dragons, goats, horses and tribal themes. Some, like the present lot, are further highlighted with a pavé diamond set dial.

Our research has shown that the enamel motif of the present watch can be attributed to France Tille, a leading enamel artist for Patek Philippe. France Tille specializes in the technique of Grand Feu enamel. In addition to the enamel work found on Patek Philippe dials, she is also known for the enamel decoration used on Patek Philippe's dome clocks.

The present lot features an attractively enameled blue bird created in the traditional cloisonné manner using hand-applied gold wire to form the cloisons.  Each enamel color must be hand applied and fired separately, the final result more a work of art than simply a dial.
