Catalogue Note

Accompanied by the Certificate of Origin dated 22 November 2011 and original display box.

Each element of the Richard Lange Tourbillon 'Pour le Mérite' was chosen for precision timekeeping. This model is unmatched in its harmonious union of history with innovation, and technical complexity with elegance.

For the dial, the firm looked to a late 18th century precision chronometer by German watchmaker Johann Heinrich Seyffert, which featured a similarly configured regulator-style dial for absolute legibility. The movement combines the highly impressive fusee and chain system, impossibly complex for usage in a wristwatch, with a one-minute tourbillon to compensate against the effects of gravity. Furthermore, this extraordinary timepiece is the first to combine stop seconds with a tourbillon mechanism. When the crown is pulled out, the tourbillon carriage and thus the seconds are arrested so that the time can be set accurately to the second.

Sotheby's is pleased to offer the present lot for the first time on behalf of the original owner. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first platinum version of this model to be offered at auction. In April of this year, Sotheby's Hong Kong sold a honey gold version of this model, also the first of its series to be offered at auction.
