Condition

The photography of the printed catalogue is slightly too light and too yellow Under naked eye the painting appaears in very good condition. Under UV light, a repaint is visible in the foreleft leg of the horse and a few tiny reoutchings are scattered over the surface

Catalogue Note

Il s'agit probablement de L’Eclatant 1er, cheval de l’Empereur Napoléon, décrit dans l'ouvrage de Philippe Osché, Les chevaux de Napoléon, p. 89: Hongre normand, gris vineux argenté, nicté, entré à l’Equipage de selle à Meudon le 23 février 1806, à l’âge de 4 ans, transféré à l’Equipage d’attelage le 14 juillet 1811, il est  réformé le 15 octobre 1814. Son prestigieux propriétaire expliquerait que Lami ait dessiné et peint l'étalon et que Paul Delaroche ait gravé le dessin de Lami en 1823 (Cf. Pierre-André Lemoisne, L’œuvre d’Eugène Lami 1800 – 1890, essai de catalogue raisonné, H. Champion, Paris, 1914, p. 369). La  lithographie de Paul Delaroche est titrée L’Eclatant, Etalon du Haras Royal du Pin. (cf. Norman D.
