Condition

The painting is in overall relatively good state of conservation. It is under a dirty varnish, thick and uniform. The painting has been relined, a bit too strongly, in the second half of the 20th century. Under UV lamp: Under a green varnish partially cleaned in the figures. There is a restoration in the cushion on the left and some retouching in the clothes of the angel on the foreground.

Catalogue Note

La composition de Stella que nous présentons n'était jusqu'alors connue que par la gravure de Gérard Edelinck (fig.1). Jacques Stella passa le début de sa carrière à Florence et à Rome, peignant de nombreuses scènes religieuses pour Côme de Médicis et pour le pape Urbain VIII. Ses tableaux inspirèrent plus tard de nombreux graveurs. En effet, Jacques Stella choisit la gravure comme moyen de diffusion de son oeuvre. Certains graveurs réalisèrent des compositions inspirées par les œuvres du peintre de son vivant, mais aussi après sa mort, c'est le cas de L’Adoration des Anges gravé en 1672 par Edlinck (1649-1707), graveur du Cabinet du Roi  connu pour ses gravures inspirées d’artistes majeurs tels que Raphaël, Le Brun ou encore Léonard de Vinci.
