Catalogue Note

Robert Colqhoun (or Kokhun, as it was rendered in Russian) was one of the many talented and energetic foreign entrepreneurs in St. Petersburg. Together with Heinrich Plinke, he bought out the firm Nichols & Plinke in 1851 and in 1854, he acquired the workshop and all the models of Carl Johann Tegelsten. Colqhuon's mark appears on a great deal of silver made for the Imperial court and members of the Imperial family and this large and impressive mirror with its symbols of victory and bravery was probably the product of an important commission.
