Description

  • Berenice Abbott
  • '"EL" STATION, 6TH AND 9TH AVENUE LINES, DOWNTOWN SIDE'
  • Gelatin silver print
the photographer's Federal Art Project 'Changing New York' and 'Duplicate' stamps and with title, date, and annotations in colored pencil on the reverse, 1936 (Yochelson, North of 59th, pl. 6; New York in the Thirties, cover)

Condition

This photograph, on double-weight paper with a smooth surface, is in generally very good condition. A small, sharp crescent-shaped handling crease that does not appear to break the emulsion is visible in the left portion of the image. There is a 1/8-inch tear to the upper margin edge. The margin corners are bumped and lightly creased, and there are small clamp impressions in the margins. The reverse of the print is lightly soiled from handling and is appropriately age-darkened at its periphery. On the reverse are the following annotations in colored pencil: '72nd Street and Columbus Avenue, Manhattan;' 'neg # 66;' 'code # II. A. 3. [crossed out] II. A. 2f2.;' and 'Feb. 6, 1936.'
