Condition

The photographs offered here are of Hemingway in a relaxed moment with son Gregory (horizontal); Hemingway drinking beer from a bottle while seated on the ground; and 9-year-old Gregory pouring a drink for his father (used in the LIFE article). These three early ferrotyped prints, on medium-weight paper and trimmed to the images, are in generally good condition. The edges are rubbed, with some small losses of emulsion. Some of the corners are bumped and creased, with some small emulsion loss. When examined in raking light, sharp and soft handling creases are visible, as well as some small impressions and finger prints. The horizontal print of Hemingway hugging his son has a very small area of slightly warmer tonality in the top of a hill in the background.

Catalogue Note

Robert Capa and Ernest Hemingway were longtime friends, having met during the Spanish Civil War.  Because of their close friendship, Capa had access to Hemingway's personal and relaxed moments, such as those pictured here, shot on assignment for LIFE magazine.
