Condition

Canvas has been glue relined. under a slightly yellowed varnish. overall the paint surface has been well retained with only some slight thinness noticeable in foliage areas. detail and coloration remain good. Under UV light, there are some small retouches to lower part of female figure's red gown. there is some possible old retouching to sky, but it is hard to read through the old varnish. Offered in an elaborately carved and gilt wood frame with some minor nicks.

Catalogue Note

The general design of the present composition, which features a fountain bordered by corinthian columns, and a tall winding tree expanding from the fountain at right, is repeated in a drawing by Lajoue located in a Parisian private collection.1
