Description

  • Ferdinand Voet
  • Portrait of a lady
  • oil on canvas, unframed

Condition

Canvas has a very old relining. Overall this picture is in lovely condition. There are a few very small scattered retouches visible under UV in the sitter's face and shoulders. A possible thin repaired tear to the right of the background, approximately six inches long, is visible to the right of the sitter in the background. Possible frame abrasion is visible at the right and left edges. Beyond these cosmetic repairs, the subtle coloration and detailing of the sitter's face and dress is well preserved. Picture is unframed.

Catalogue Note

Ferdinand Voet was the principal portrait painter in Rome during the third quarter of the 17th century and he was greatly sought after by Roman aristocratic families; he is known to have worked extensively for the Altieri, Chigi, Colonna, Mancini, Odescalchi, Piccolomini, Rocci and Rospigliosi. Though patronized mainly by Roman clients, the present figure's costume, jewelry, and hairstyle help to date this charming portrait to circa 1682-4, during a period when Voet executed a number of portraits for members of the court of Savoy in Piedmont. It may be compared to other sitters from this period, including a portrait of Anna Silvia Solaro di Govone (formerly with Galleria Zabert, Turin).1

We are grateful to Dott. Francesco Petrucci for endorsing the attribution to Ferdinand Voet on the basis of photographs, and for his assistance in the cataloguing of this lot.
