  • Seascape in a storm with a shipwreck along a rocky coast
  • oil on canvas, unframed
  • 48 5/8 x 68 7/8 inches

Provenance

Sir Edward Synge-Hutchison (1830-1906), 4th Bt., Castlesallagh, Wicklow, Ireland, whose motto, coat-of-arms and name appear on a label on the reverse;
Anonymous sale, Paris, Ader-Tajan, June 26, 1992, lot 28, where acquired.

Condition

The canvas has an old glue relining and the paint surface is covered with a dirty, discoloured varnish with windows of old test cleaning in the sky in the upper left corner. There is a little abrasion from an old frame on all four edges. The paint surface is in quite good condition overall and, though perhaps a little pressed in the sky from the relining, the painting reads well. An inspection under UV is impeded by the old varnish though there appear to be old retouches and reworkings in the sky especially around the rigging. The landscape for the most part is good with possible old restoration though it is very difficult to see. The painting has not been restored in a long time and would benefit from a light clean and sensitive restoration. Offered unframed.
