Description

  • Pieter Bout
  • A landscape with a barge being towed along a canal
  • signed and dated lower right: P.Bout / 1683
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Cologne, Lempertz, 5-7 May 1960, lot 13.

Condition

The support consists of three horizontal oak planks which are cradled on the reverse and which are stable. The paint surface is in satisfactory condition. The grain of the wood is, however, visible in most areas of the painting and there are some small restored loses along the grains. There are further restorations along the panel joins, presumably the result of flaking and loses in these areas. There are some larger areas of restoration in the sky notible immediately around the right hand windmill, and in an area in the very centre of the composition. The landscape itself seems to have undergone less restoration though there is a restored damage in the middle of the canal. The painting would benefit from cleaning. Sold in a narrow, modern gilt frame.
