Description

  • Gottfried Wals, called Goffredo Tedesco
  • Landscape with a herdsman watering his animals on the shore of a lake, a farmhouse on the right
  • inscribed with inventory number on the reverse: 120
  • oil on paper transferred to canvas

Provenance

"Out of the collection of Prince Poniatowski whose gallery was sold in England some few years ago" (according to an old label on the reverse);

In the collection of the family of the present owner for at least the last 70 years.

Condition

The picture is slightly less yellow in tone than the catalogue illustration would suggest. It is oil on paper which has been laid onto canvas. The paint surface is in good overall condition and there is a slightly blanching varnish. There are also some slightly discoloured retouchings visible in the lighter pigments of the sky upper right and centre left probably to old frame abrasion and there is minor paint loss upper right to the canvas edge. Otherwise it is in good overall condition. Examination under ultraviolet confirms the aforementioned retouching and reveals some otherwise scattered minor cosmetic strengthening to the darker pigments in the trees and the rocks lower left, as well as some flecks to the water. Offered in a fine 17th century carved and gilt wood frame in good overall condition.

Catalogue Note

This previously unrecorded painting is an extended rectangular variant of a circular painting on copper in the Museum der Kunst in Riga,1 and is an exciting new addition to the small and distinguished oeuvre of Goffredo Wals. We are grateful to Professor Marcel Roethlisberger for confirming the attribution on the basis of photographs.
