Condition

The paint surface is even and the colours are strong and well- preserved. The paint is not too pressed and remains in good condition, despite the fact that the canvas has recently been relined. There is an even varnish over the whole surface and only minor repairs: such is in the sky upper left and right corners, a small patch on the left on the roof, and another on the branch of one of the trees in the left centre. There is some frame rubbing on all four sides, but these have been carefuly overpainted. The painting is sold in a wooden frame, with a glass front and a protective wood backing.

Catalogue Note

This work has previously been sold attributed to Gerrit Adriaensz. Berckheyde. However both J. Nieuwstraten and M. de Kinkelder from the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie have attributed the landscape to Adriaen Hendricksz. Verboom. The figures, in particular the group on the right, are believed to be by Gerrit Adriaensz Berckheyde. The work should dated to Berckheyde's early period, around 1655, judging by the costume of the couple on the left.

A copy of this work, attributed to Verboom and Berckheyde, and measuring 59.1 by 72.4 cm., was sold New York, Christie's, 4 October 2007, lot 44.
