Description

  • Balthasar Denner
  • Portrait of an old lady wearing a fur trimmed coat
  • oil on copper

Condition

The catalogue illustration is representative. The copper support is flat and stable. The paint surface is secured by a yellowed varnish and it dirty but appears to the naked eye to be in very good condition. Inspection under UV light reveals very minor retouching and confirms the good condition. A surface clean would improve the overall tonality. Offered in a plain wooden painted gold frame generally in good condition.

Catalogue Note

Born in Hamburg in 1685, Denner began his career as a miniaturist although he subsequently painted mostly half lengths and head studies. In line with the eighteenth-century fascination with physiognomy, his miniaturist technique and forensic interest in the effects of growing old brought him international acclaim. Several autograph versions of this composition exist, which all relate to a picture purchased from the artist in 1721 by the Emperor Charles VI of Austria for the extraordinary sum of 600 ducats. One version is in the Dresden Art Gallery (inv. no. 73/22), and another on panel was sold New York, Sotheby’s, 13 October 1989, lot 134.
