Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 7 July 2005, lot 177 (as attributed to Giuseppe Cusati), where acquired by the present owner.

Condition

The painting has been recently relined and cleaned. To the naked eye the paint surface appears in very good condition with the impasto well preserved and the colours still vibrant. Inspection under UV light confirms this. Offered in a later carved and gilt wooden frame in good condition.

Shortly after its appearance at auction in 2005, Fred Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie (RKD) in The Hague, reattributed the work to Abraham Brueghel. The work is now listed as such on the RKD database under entry 192635.
